Nothing better than tell my story soon after another surgery because of Endometriosis. And Endometriosis is something that I never thought could condition a person's life so much.

I'll start with what I think was the beginning.
I never suffered a lot with menstruation pains.
My little hell was another.

The beginning of health issues
Recurrent urinary tract infections, which began around age 17 and have lasted for years. I looked for a lot of experts, they all told me the same thing and nothing explained why this happened. And when I talk about recurrent urinary tract infections, I mean of constant infections that occur every month of the year and sometimes happens two to three times a month. It was very hostile and I tried everything, gynecologists, urologists, traditional medicine, natural medicine, homeopathy, food, teas ... everything! For 4 years it was like this! I did not know how to live any other way. I think this was already an omen of the weakening of the immune system and what was to come.

One more dark stage of life
Neither gave rest and soon after, in 2010, I started with kidney cramps, because of nephrolithiasis. A kidney disease that can bring a lot of suffering. And I know well what that is! I was 20 years old and I was going through another hell! I lost count of the several times I had to go to the hospital emergency to receive intravenous medication since nothing else worked. One of the worst pain I've ever felt and were episodes that lasted 12 hours in a row !! 8 months of pure suffering until my kidney expels a kidney stone with 6 mm. A year later I had 3 more kidney stones in both kidneys. Doctors wondered if there were any problems with the hormonal glands, thyroid or pituitary gland. Inclusive that I did blood tests and thyroid imaging tests to see if there were any problems. There were some changes but nothing wrong. Nothing to give the doctors the origin of this problem. I have been taking control of renal lithiasis until now and at least this seems ok.

A strange episode
With all of this, I do not even know when the menstrual pain started, I just know they were gradual and they came in my life without realizing it. By 2014, I had a heavy mid-cycle hemorrhage, and I was taking the pill correctly. I went as fast as possible to a gynecologist, and they found something very strange in my womb something that even today doctors can not explain what it was. I had to take a pill to abort, to clean the uterus. They never told me what it was, I just know it was similar to a gestational sac that was empty. Weird!

Adenomyosis?
By 2015, on a routine pelvic ultrasound, I was diagnosed with adenomyosis. However, a few months later they told me that it was impossible to have adenomyosis because it was a "disease of older women". Seriously? Are you kidding with this? By this time I had strong menstrual pains, strong contractions in the womb, similar to the 'abortion', very strong rectal pain, nausea. Tired of this I stopped taking the contraceptive pill of my own will. I drastically changed my food. I felt better, but the pains in menstruation continued. Only the strong analgesics were effective. 7 months without taking the pill, and in September 2015 I started it again. Acne was already getting worse and there was no way to control it any other way. By that time, I had a knee surgery to repair what was causing me an irreversible cartilage injury. It was an arthroscopy to the left knee, under general anesthesia and with a month and a half of recovery with the help of physiotherapy.

Endometriosis and the first surgery
Well, I was no longer having a good time as you can see, when in December 2015 I began again with urinary system changes, right kidney pains and I thought it was all coming back. I cried, I did not know what to do. I finished my master's thesis and already in January 2016, I went back to the doctor and asked for a pelvic and renal ultrasound to know what was going on. My whole world fell when in the images we saw an enormous 7cm cyst, attached to the right ovary. Could it be suggestive of a hemorrhagic cyst, an endometrioma ... would it be malignant? Needed to undergo another surgery? But what is this now?
We began to suspect endometriosis and they indicated me for surgery with the risk of losing the right ovary. Waiting for the surgery the ovary cyst reached 9 cm and was already 2 times larger than the uterus and occupied almost all my pelvis. The bladder was being pressed constantly, and the nausea was more than many. My days were miserable until the day of surgery arrived in June 2016, and 2 endometriomas were removed from the right ovary by laparoscopy. They were able to save a large part of the ovary but found no more lesions of endometriosis. The pain continued after surgery, especially in the rectum. 2 months later, in the post-surgical medical appointment, I received the final confirmation of endometriosis and that it was all benign. But it was not over. I saw it on the face of the doctor when she stared at the ultrasound screen. "I think you have something here again ... but let's not be alarmed." What? I'm still out of a second surgery in a space of 8 months and you're already telling me that there might be something else again??? It seemed like a bad dream. I did an ultrasound and an MRI, which accused a new endometrioma in the ovary already with 4.5 cm. The endometriosis had returned or maybe had never left ...

The second surgery
I decided to go to one of the best endometriosis doctors in Portugal, Dr. Filipa Osório. On examining me, in addition to the endometrioma, she suspected that I also had a nodule lodged between the uterus and the high rectum and more innumerable adhesions between the organs on the right side of the pelvis. Since she did not want to undergo another surgery so early, She advised me to be on a three-month continuous pill (no menstruation) period to see if the lesions regressed. Anything! After 3 months, nothing regressed and it was when another devastating news came: 'Your case will only be resolved with a new surgery, you can not continue like this because it can have irreversible or even more serious consequences.' The diagnosis of adenomyosis, severe and deep endometriosis was confirmed.
We were already in March 2017, when everything was set for a new surgery. It was my third in a year and a half. By this time, I was already being warned that they could not guarantee that they would be able to stop the recurrence of the disease, it could come back after another operation. Finally, the surgery arrived, where the endometrioma of the right ovary (almost 5 cm), the recto-vaginal septum (almost 3 cm) and all the adhesions that had appeared during the last 9 months were removed by laparoscopy. I still not know the results of the biopsy and at the moment I am still at home recovering.

Nada melhor que contar a minha história logo após mais uma cirurgia por culpa da Endometriose. E Endometriose é algo que nunca pensei que pudesse condicionar tanto a vida de uma pessoa.

Vou começar pelo que acho que foi o início. 

Eu nunca sofri muito com dores da menstruação. 

O meu pequeno inferno foi outro. 

O início dos problemas de saúde

Infeções urinárias de recorrência, que começaram por volta dos 17 anos e prologaram-se durante anos. Procurei imensos especialistas, todos me diziam a mesma coisa e nada explicava o porque de tal acontecer. E quando falo em infeções urinárias de recorrência, falo em infeções constantes que ocorriam todos os meses do ano e por vezes chegavam a ser duas a três vezes por mês. Foi algo muito hostil e eu tentei de tudo, ginecologistas, urologistas, medicina tradicional, medicina natural, homeopatia, alimentação, chás... tudo! Durante 4 anos foi assim! Eu já não sabia viver de outra forma. Acho que isto já era um presságio do enfraquecimento do sistema imunitário e do que estava para vir.

Mais uma etapa negra

Nem deu descanso e logo a seguir, em 2010, comecei com cólicas renais, por conta de litíase renal. Uma doença dos rins que pode trazer muito sofrimento. E eu sei bem o que isso é! Tinha 20 anos e estava a passar por outro, grande inferno! Perdi a conta da quantidade de vezes que tive que recorrer às urgências para receber medicação intravenosa, pois já nada funcionava. Uma das piores dores que já senti e eram episódios que chegavam a durar 12 horas seguidas!! 8 meses de puro sofrimento até o meu rim expulsar um cálculo renal com 6 mm. Um ano depois já tinha mais 3 cálculos renais nos dois rins. Os médicos chegaram a questionar-se se haveria algum problema das glândulas hormonais, tiróide ou hipófise. Inclusivo que cheguei a fazer análises ao sangue e exames de imagem à tiróide para confirmar se haveria algum problema. Havia algumas alterações mas nada de alarmante. Nada que desse informação aos médicos da origem disto tudo. Fui controlando a litíase renal até hoje e pelo menos isso parece que foi com sucesso.

Um episódio estranho

Com isto tudo nem sei quando começaram as dores menstruais, só sei que foram graduais e entraram na minha vida sem me aperceber. Em 2014, tive um forte hemorragia a meio do ciclo, e eu tomava a pílula toda certa. Fui o mais rápido possível a um ginecologista, e deteram-me algo muito estranho no útero algo que ainda hoje os médicos não sabem explicar o que foi. Tive que tomar um comprimido para abortar, para limpar o útero. Nunca me disseram o que era, só me disseram era semelhante a um saco gestacional que estava vazio. Estranho!

Adenomiose?

Em 2015, numa ecografia pélvica de rotina, diagnosticaram-me com a adenomiose. Entretanto uns meses mais tarde disseram-me que era impossível ter adenomiose pois era uma "doença das mulheres mais velhas". A sério? Mas andam a gozar com isto? Por esta altura já tinha fortes dores menstruais, fortes contrações no útero, semelhantes à simulação do 'aborto', fortíssimas dor do recto, náuseas. Farta disto tudo parei de tomar a pílula concepcional por vontade própria. Mudei drasticamente a minha alimentação. Sentia-me melhor, mas as dores na menstruação continuaram. Já só os analgésicos fortes é que faziam efeito.  7 meses sem tomar a pílula, e em setembro de 2015 voltei a tomá-la. O acne já se estava agravar muito e não havia como controlar de outra forma. Por essa altura, tive que fazer uma intervenção cirúrgica no joelho para reparar o que me estava a causar uma lesão irreversível na cartilagem. Foi uma artroscopia ao joelho esquerdo, sobre anestesia geral e com 1 mês e meio de recuperação com ajuda de fisioterapia.

Endometriose e a primeira cirurgia

Bom eu já não estava a passar um bom momento como podem calcular, quando em dezembro de 2015 começaram outra vez alterações do sistema urinário, dores no rim direito e eu pensei que estava tudo a voltar. Chorei, não sabia o que fazer. Acabei a minha tese de mestrado e já em janeiro de 2016, voltei ao médico e pedi uma ecografia pélvica e renal para saber o que passava. Todo o meu mundo caiu, quando nas imagens se viu uma enorme massa anexial com 7cm, alojada no ovário direito. Podia ser sugestivo de quisto hemorrágico, endometrioma... seria maligno? necessitava de passar por outra cirurgia? mas o que é isto agora? 
Começou-se a desconfiar de endometriose e fui indicada para cirurgia com o risco de perder o ovário direito.. À espera da cirurgia a massa no ovário atingiu os 9 cm e já estava 2 vezes maior que o útero e ocupava quase toda a minha pelve. A bexiga estava a ser pressionada constantemente, e as náuseas eram mais que muitas. Os meus dias eram miseráveis, até que chegou o dia da cirurgia, em junho de 2016, e me retiraram 2 endometriomas do ovário direito, por laparoscopia. Conseguiram salvar uma grande parte do ovário, mas não encontraram mais lesões de endometriose. As dores continuaram após a cirurgia, principalmente no recto. 2 meses depois, com a consulta pós-cirúrgica recebi a confirmação final de endometriose e que era tudo benigno. Mas não se ficou por aqui. Eu vi na cara da médica quando ficou a olhar para o ecrã da ecografia. "Acho que tens aqui qualquer coisa outra vez.. mas não vamos nos alarmar". O quê? Ainda agora sai de uma segunda cirurgia num espaço de 8 meses e já me está a dizer que pode haver outra coisa outra vez??? Parecia mentira. Fui fazer uma ecografia e uma ressonância magnética, que acusou novo endometrioma no ovário já com 4,5 cm. A endometriose tinha voltado, ou se calhar nunca tinha saído daqui...

A segunda cirurgia
Decidi recorrer a uma das melhores médicas na área da endometriose em Portugal, Dr. Filipa Osório. Ao analisar-me, além do endometrioma, suspeitou que tivesse também um nódulo alojado ente o útero e o alto recto e mais inúmeras aderências entre os orgãos no lado direito da pelve. Como não queria que eu passa-se por outra cirurgia tão cedo, recomendou-me estar um período de três meses sob efeito de pílula contínua (sem menstruação) para ver se as lesões regrediam. Nada! Passado 3 meses, nada regrediu e foi quando surgiu mais uma notícia devastadora: 'O teu caso só se resolve com uma nova cirurgia, não podes continuar assim pois pode trazer consequências irreversíveis ou ainda mais gravosas'. Confirmou-se o diagnóstico de adenomiose, endometriose severa e profunda
Já estávamos em Março de 2017, quando ficou tudo marcado para uma nova cirurgia. Era a minha terceira num espaço de ano e meio. Por essa altura, já me estavam a avisar que não podiam garantir que fossem capazes de travar a recorrência da doença, ela poderia voltar após mais uma operação. Finalmente chegou a cirurgia, onde me retiraram, por via laparoscópica, o endometrioma do ovário direito (quase 5 cm), o nódulo do septo recto-vaginal (quase 3 cm) e todas as aderências que surgiram durante os últimos 9 meses. Os resultados da biópsia ainda são desconhecidos e neste momento ainda estou em casa a recuperar.
Como devem calcular a história continua... E com a Endometriose a história nunca acaba...
