What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is not the uncontrolled growth of endometrial cells. Endometriosis is the uncontrolled growth of cells SIMILAR to those of the endometrium.

Where do these cells grow? Basically everywhere. In the pelvic cavity, in the ovaries, in the tubes, in the intestines, in the bladder, in the ureters, in the kidneys, in the liver, in the diaphragm, in the lungs, in the brain, in the nose, in the nails, in the skin, everywhere!

Basically, Endometriosis has a mechanism similar to a malignant disease, such as cancer. However Endometriosis is benign, and I like to call it benign cancer. But although it does not jeopardize the function of healthy cells, it can jeopardize the functioning of the organs, damaging their tissues and distorting their anatomy. In very serious cases, it can lead to kidney failure, intestinal perforation, lung failure, infertility, among others.

Pain is another complication of Endometriosis, it causes immense pain, debilitating pain, pain in different organs, localized pains, diffuse pains, all types of pain. The pain manifests mainly during menstruation because cells behave exactly like the endometrium, such as bleeding. The problem is that the blood has nowhere to go and so it will provoke inflammation, adhesions, which helps further in the development of the disease.

Quite the opposite. Although it is a disease of women, it affects about 20% of this universe. That is why it is a disease that has a great impact not only on a personal and family level but also on a social level.

So why have I never heard of endometriosis?

Não. Não é uma doença exclusiva do útero ou do endométrio. Antes fosse..

Endometriose nem tão pouco é o crescimento descontrolado das células do endométrio. Endometriose é o crescimento descontrolado de células SEMELHANTES às do endométrio. 

Onde se desenvolvem estas células? Basicamente em todo o lado. Na cavidade pélvica, nos ovários, nas trompas, nos intestinos, na bexiga, nos ureteres, nos rins, no fígado, no diafragma, nos pulmões, no cérebro, no nariz, nas unhas, na pele, em todo o lado!

Basicamente a Endometriose tem um mecanismo semelhante a uma doença maligna, como o cancro. No entanto a Endometriose é benigna, e eu gosto de lhe chamar cancro benigno. Mas apesar de não pôr em causa o funcinamento das células saúdaveis, ela pode pôr em causa o funcionamento dos orgãos, danificando os seus tecidos e distorcendo a sua anatomia. Em casos muito graves, pode levar à falência renal, à perfuração intestinal, falência dos pulmões, à infertilidade, entre outras.

A dor é outra das complicações da Endometriose, provoca imensa dor, dor debilitante, dor em diferentes orgãos, dores localizadas, dores difusas, todo o tipo de dor. A dor manifesta-se principalmente durante a menstruação, pois células comportam-se exatamente como o endométrio, ou seja sangram. O problema é que o sangue não tem nenhum sítio para onde ir e por isso vai provocando inflamação, aderências, o que ajuda ainda mais no desenvolvimento da doença. 

Se a endometriose é assim tão grave, porquê nunca ouvi falar nela? Afeta pouca gente?

Muito pelo contrário. Apesar de ser uma doença das mulheres, afeta cerca 20% deste universo. Por isso é uma doença com uma grande impacto não só a nível pessoal e familiar, mas também a nível social.

Então porque nunca ouvi falar da endometriose?

Essa é a grande questão.
